As is the case with this guy and his friends who don’t just talk about how the world should be changed, but actually sit down and do it. They are working in the field of development cooperation and IT – Information and Communication Technologies for Development, ICT4D short.

Ok, unfortunately, I don’t have a clue about IT, don’t know much about development cooperation, and don’t have much money to spare – so the only thing I can actually do is write about them – hoping that someone reads about their project who is in a better position than me to make a contribution and offer support!

By the way, there is an interesting exhibition at the Leopold museum in Vienna – about children toys – but much more than that, too. Read more…

Transmitter Failure - Jenny Owen Youngs

Went to Regina Spektor yesterday – the supporting act was Jenny Owen Youngs, and she was great (Regina was also quite ok). Jenny did a lot of hopping (’cause someone in the audience asked her to), and she commended the Viennese audience for clapping about 15% more than usual at other European concerts where she performed. Though it has to be said that the Gasometer is the worst location for a concert which can possibly be found in Vienna.

She said she would come to the merchandise booth after the concert, and she actually really did!

Of course, it ain’t ever too far to see Regina Spektor live  on stage – but I am quite happy that the stage is only a couple of minutes away from dergelbeSalon, actually. So if you have nothing better to do on December 16 – and chances are there is nothing better anyway…

To sum up her music in 11:11 minutes: it’s like having a love affair, on the back of a truck, with Mary Ann, who is Pavlov’s daughter, in case you didn’t know. And she’ll send you flyin‘, because I want to sing, either in buildings or in plain sunshine! Or maybe so…

WiWi Cafe Berlin

If you ever happen to look for a nice café close to “TU Berlin” (Berlin University of Technology), try the “WiWi Cafe” – a cosy place run by students for students and everybody else! They also help students at the faculty of economics and management in organizing their curriculum (psychological coaching depends on the mood of the person behind the bar). But providing a nice place to sit, chat and learn is in my opinion the most important service to the students there!

On a personal note: I tried for almost 6 months to teach the students there that the word “Kafffe” should actually be pronounced “Kafeee” – however, my success was limited.

Blue Orange

A new BlueOrange Cafe opened recently just next to dergelbeSalon. It is quite difficult to find – you actually have to go into the Finance Ministry building.

Unfortunately, the location is intended for the people working in the ministry building, so the opening hours are rather incompatible with our typical visiting hours. But anyway, we can wholeheartedly recommend the experience!

(Note: most people don’t understand them in any case, whether joke or not, or have been made to believe so by bad maths tuition in high school!)

For all people with some basic knowledge about natural sciences or engineering (or anything related), there is a light at the end of the tunnel: xkcd.com. Fun and jokes – most of which you need a diploma or two to make sense of – but it’s absolutely worth it. Check it out!

    We were prevented from actually entering due to heavy rain…
  • Museumsinsel, Berlin (UNESCO World Cultural Heritage)
    Strictly speaking, we weren’t there this time – but we have been there plenty of times before…
  • Botanical Garden, Uppsala
  • Linnéträdgården, Uppsala
    This is actually the oldest botanical garden in Sweden, founded in 1655

We have also visited Stockholm, but were too exhausted after three weeks of travelling to make it to either the Botanical Garden or any of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites close to the city… But we’ll do better next time!
